Pharmacy Technician

June 2019 • Baytown, TX

What I liked

This was my first position as a pharmacy technician. I had gotten my trainee license the past winter but waited until summer to find a job. My coworkers were extremely helpful and understanding. Our store was among the busiest in the area, so I had to learn quickly. It is a great job with just enough work to do so that nobody should ever be bored. My shifts go by very quickly. I enjoyed the challenge, and I learn more every day.

What I wish was different

Since we were so busy, I was almost always stuck working the drive-thru for the majority of my shift. I was able to go into the back to fill prescriptions a few times, but this was normally reserved for the more experienced technicians. I would've appreciated more of a flow between stations during my shift.

Advice

Be ready for the workload. It is by no means unbearable, but at times there may be up to 7 patients in line while you're struggling to push a certain medication through one person's insurance with no luck at all. This does not happen often, but around 5 p.m. when everyone gets off work you can expect there to be a surge in activity. Also, you WILL have customers that are just in a bad mood and might even be angry at you for an insurance-related problem or something else you cannot control. It is very important to remain polite, don't take it personally, and call a manager if need be.

Community Management Intern

June - August 2019 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I had an amazing manager who took the time to coach and explains the details of my task or how things operate. I really enjoyed working with my coworkers because the people made the environment more welcoming and helped me thrive.

What I wish was different

Even though I had the "manager" access and certain power to override if something goes wrong on the cash register, I wanted to learn more about how to manage like a manager and get to know more about scheduling people.

Advice

Ask a lot of questions when you're working because if you don't ask, people won't know that you don't know, and this will results in you not doing/trying your best at work. Additionally, come in with a positive attitude because your attitude will affect your coworker and if everyone has a positive attitude, the workplace is much more fun and enjoyable to work in.

Retail Manager

April 2014 - November 2019 • Bridgeton, NJ

What I liked

The experience & opportunities I was given over the years and they were generous with the pay rate.

What I wish was different

The company’s decisions as a whole that made working there a lot more harder due to the lack of hours so lack of employees on trying to get things done and the same applies for the pharmacy department

Advice

Be prepared and expect the unexpected with your customers because the sweet older customers aren’t so sweet always
