Utah State University Human Resources

Research Intern

May - August 2018 • Logan, UT

What I liked

I loved getting hands on experience with research in the sciences.

What I wish was different

Honestly, nothing. It was a great experience overall and helped me grow as a person.

Advice

Be prepared to go out of your comfort zone. A main component of research is communicating your results which includes presenting it.

Classroom Support Technician

August 2017 • Logan, UT

What I liked

The schedule was predictable but flexible - the shift was every weekday from 8am to 5pm, but I could take as many days off as I wanted. In addition, it was the place I had been working all school year, so I knew how the job worked, I knew all the people, but I did get to learn a little more about the technology and installation.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have been paid more, besides the increase in hours. I felt like the things I did most days were worth more than $9/hr.

Advice

I'm not sure I need to share any advice. Working the summer did end up giving me a raise for this semester, but I don't think I really have any advice.

Agriculture and 4-H Intern

May - August 2018 • Beaver, UT

What I liked

I got to work with a program that I had been a member of for 10 years and inspire students to love the program as much as I did. I also got to spend time outside working on the ground squirrel situation on Milford Flat, which reminded me of the summers I spent on the family farm.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have continued the experience as I loved helping the youth of Beaver County and that the poison we used on the squirrels had been a little less smelly as it gave me a minor headache afterwards.

Advice

Be ready for everything to go wrong during lessons, there is always something you’ll forget or someone else will forget. You may not have time to do everything you planned, no matter how long it took when you first tried it out.

Landscaper 1

May - August 2018 • Logan, UT

What I liked

The supervisors and administrators are amazing to work with. They were willing to listen to requests for better pay after a few months of work, and were also very accommodating in regards to schedules. It's also a really fantastic work environment to be outside in nature all day long. It kept me fit, and improved my mental health.

What I wish was different

It's always nice to have better pay, but who doesn't say that about their job? Other than that, I don't have much I would change. It was an excellent job.

Advice

Go willing to learn and work hard, but also be open to having fun. It's a great experience when you choose to make it that way. Also, make sure to bring lots of water, something to keep you cool, and a hearty lunch!!

Undergraduate Research Assistant

September 2018 • Logan, UT

What I liked

It is a very interesting research project with lots of amazing experiences.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been paid.

Advice

I felt completely under qualified and so I did a lot of research about the program, the project, and the interviewer. I came very prepared to the interview with my resume, cover letter, a new shirt, and ready to impress, only to find out I had already gotten the position! I didn't feel like any of the preparation was wasted though, because I had learned a lot about getting ready, and overall it paid off.
