I enjoyed the flexibility of the hours and being involved in experiments and projects that I found interesting. It was a positive environment and I felt supported in the work that I was doing.

Advice

For other students who are looking for a research internship or other job experience in the field, definitely reach out to professors and the heads of labs. I found my current job by sending out several emails and making personal contact when asking after potential opportunities.

What I liked

I really enjoyed being able to work on a range of projects all around the state of Utah. Many of the projects that we worked to design this summer are built or in the process of being built. I had lots of experiences that I would not have had if I had been working in a design firm.

If your experiments aren't working, instead of trying other approaches, troubleshoot your experiment at the point it began failing, or showing "false-negatives".

Stay in close contact with you Supervisor during the experience, as well as your academic adviser they can be a lot of help. You need them to succeed.

When you go to an internship, remember that you are there to learn. Employers probably won't expect you to be an expert at anything, so take advantage of the opportunity to ask lots of questions and absorb as much information as possible!

I liked the experience of researching a project that was used in industry. I learned a lot of industry standards and how to please the client.

I wish I was able to do some of the computational fluid dynamics. I felt that would have been valuable work experience.
