USU Dining Services

Dishwasher

March - September 2021 • Logan, UT

What I liked

Free meal after every shift and my managers (Scotty and Amber) were really awesome.

What I wish was different

I wish there were shorter shifts in the dishroom (3 hours rather than 5-6) and that dishroom employees can also work in other sections of the Junction. I was fine working in the dishroom one or two shifts a week, but not every day. Another thing is we typically didn't get the next weeks schedule until a day or two before that week started so it made it a little hard to plan out the next week.

Advice

Honestly it was a good job, but I would recommend staying out of the dishroom. The dishroom employees were always the last to go home and given the hardest work for the same wage. Other than the long shifts in the dishroom, I loved my managers and the Junction. It's a good job for college students who live on or close to campus.

dishroom worker

What I liked

The dishroom is easily a great job. The pay is standard, a bit above minimum wage, depending on position, but all marketplace employees eat once for every day they work. This makes it very easy to stay fed in school if you are working several times a week or more. All the supervisors are great - they are understanding of your schedule, and as long as you don't request time off at the last minute, you'll probably get it. They all really care about the marketplace employees, and they'll do all they can to keep people's jobs, such as during the closures due to COVID-19. It has been my favorite job so far, and a great fit for many college students.

What I wish was different

Before I took a two year break to serve as a missionary, I did my first year at the marketplace dishroom. Due to several factors, such as some of my coworkers being unfriendly, and inefficiencies in the way we washed dishes, it was difficult at times. After my mission, I came back to the marketplace, and they'd made many improvements to how quickly dishwashing was done. Plus, all the people I didn't like were gone. So I can't think of anything now that I don't really like.

Advice

This is a job where you'll be standing up your whole shift -sometimes standing in the same place, so make sure you have shoes with good soles. You'll will have to deal with food waste, which might make some people uncomfortable. The biggest difference in my first school year working here and my second was that I got a smartphone. Being able to listen to podcasts and music makes the job much easier. Once you learn all the positions in dishroom, you can put on a podcast or audiobook, and that will make work pass by smoothly.

Junction Employee

August 2018 - November 2019 • Logan, UT

What I liked

The Junction is super chill, and they are a really good work environment. They are super flexible with school schedules and tests. You can work as much or as little as you are able to with your schedule.

What I wish was different

Honestly the only thing I'd change is the hourly wage.

Advice

The Junction is a great place to work if you are taking a bunch of classes, and if you want free food each shift.
