Graphic Designer Intern

May 2022 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

I enjoyed getting to know the people I worked with, they were very friendly, understanding, and passionate about the work they do. They responded to emails fairly quick, and were always willing and able to answer any questions I had. They introduced me to other people which helped me grow my network. Unlike with other companies that you may work as a Graphic Designer for, I was given some structure and direction for what was wanted for a design, but I still had creative freedom to make it my own. I also was given decline to complete but I had more freedom to choose when I worked within the deadline, so I could schedule work time without it feeling overwhelming.

What I wish was different

For the events I worked on, there where other groups involved, and my designs were sent to someone from that group, they gave feedback to my supervisors and they relayed the information backed to me. I wished I could have had a possible meeting with those individuals so I could get a better sense of what they would like to see from the design.

Advice

This internship is a little different as it is a remote internship. This experience really makes use of your communication skills as you not only have online meetings, but also, you are often sending out emails to others, as well as reading emails. You also have to manage your time well to meet short deadlines, while working off-site. You're not necessarily working in a traditional work environment and you can become easily distracted and get off track. Whereas in on-site. you are most likely working in a more office-like setting. With this, you could find yourself to get into work-mode more easily, and there are less distractions. Working remotely, you have to be more disciplined as it is up to you when you decide to work.

September - December 2021 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

I really enjoyed the personal, laid-back attitude of the office space and employees. It felt less like a company and more like a small family that was passionate about the same things. Feedback about work done was very satisfactory and helpful, it really helped improve what work I was doing. The projects themselves were super enjoyable with a lot of creative freedom.

What I wish was different

While the office space was very personal, I feel there were quite a few times work could have been done remotely, especially during a pandemic.

Advice

Good communication skills are a definite when working with TUTC - constant updates, emails, and conversations are needed.

What I liked

My supervisor and coworkers were kind and gave honest, helpful feedback. They were very passionate about the work they do. Creating graphics gave me invaluable, real, working experience and insight into the design world.

What I wish was different

I wish we did not have to write weekly reflection papers, but I understand why we needed to do it.

Advice

Learn how to manage your time and how to be kind, patient, and understanding with coworkers. It is also important to learn how to accept both positive and negative feedback and take nothing personally, as it is just about creating a piece the client/supervisor wants.

Advice

Some advice I would give to future interns or workers is to come into the internship with a open mind and to be ready to receive critique on your work. It will take many versions to get to the final product, but it is for the better.
