What I liked

Target has changed its way of fun in finding the floor. Team members are given areas on the floor they are “business owners.” This gave me ownership over an area and motivation to be more dedicated to my job.

Target Technology Services Intern - Internal Cloud

June - August 2019 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I really enjoyed the company culture at Target. It was very friendly and they cared a lot about the customer. In the tech space especially, the CIO emphasized learning heavily which is a great environment to be in as a developer. From talking to my manager, there also seemed to be lots of opportunities to move around as a full time employee. If the current team gets too stagnant for you, managers are willing to work with you to place you with a better fit. I was also blown away by how diverse the tech at Target is. There are so many teams working on all different products for stores, warehouse, transportation, corporate issues, security, infrastructure, big data, and more. I also loved being in Minneapolis. It had so much to offer with events, food, and outdoor spaces. Great place to be!

What I wish was different

The team I was placed on and the work I was doing was not ideal. My mentor was often too busy to give me work to do, and the team structure was less focused on development and more on maintaining and improving an existing platform. This situation was not ideal for the way I like to work, but it by no means ruined my experience.

Advice

Reach out and talk to as many people as possible! Pretty much anyone is willing to find 15-30 minutes to have a get to know you (GTKY) which was amazing. I did not take advantage of it as much as I should have.

Cashier

June - August 2019 • Quakertown, PA

What I liked

That the job wasn't too high stakes or anything earth shattering, there were some usual issues that come with retail jobs but nothing too often. Shifts and hours every week were consistent and not exhausting for a summer job.

What I wish was different

A little bit less of a reliance on having to get customers to sign up for the company credit/debit card, while they told us we couldn't be fired for not getting them, there was always a "Well you don't have to but..." in the air that did lead to times that felt like there was too much pressure on me and other coworkers.

Advice

If you're able to, be honest about what specific work hours you want/shifts, I've had other jobs where I was more reluctant and ended up getting used despite what I had asked for but was afraid to talk about to get changed.

Clothing Stylist

May 2019 • Novi, MI

What I liked

I liked that there was a lot of personal autonomy, and the managers did not micro-manage me, as they did at my old job at Old Navy. I also liked that I earn $13.50/hr, and that my pay has increased to $15.50/hr. It was really awesome that they paid us that much for a unskilled job.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have gotten more hours

Advice

Just go ahead an apply! I didn't think they would accept me (I don't have a ton of retail experience), but I interviewed anyway, and I got the job.

Barista

July 2017 - August 2019 • Fredericksburg, VA

What I liked

I loved the people I worked with and being able to connect with the guests that would come in. I developed a connection with my team leads and they helped me a lot during my first couple months of working there.

What I wish was different

I do wish that there would have been more consistency with hours and the schedule making as sometimes they would do hour cuts with no warning until the new schedules were posted.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give is to always keep yourself level headed when dealing with difficult customers or people as it makes it easier in the long run.

Apparels and Accessories Sales person

May - August 2019 • Boulder, CO

What I liked

I liked a lot of my coworkers here. Most of of became really close friends so that made work go by fast.

What I wish was different

The communication within this Target location was terrible. Since my colleagues and I weren't considered "point people" we were often left out of the loop for lots of tasks. This lack of communication also results in employees getting chewed out or even laid off without notice (like in my case) because team leaders do not communicate about people calling in and such. Communication skills are so important when it comes to large corporations like this and it was disappointing/frustrating to experience everything that I did since I ended up getting the short end of the stick. Despite doing everything I was instructed to do for my situation.

Advice

As someone whose worked in the apparels and Accessories department, you can't have thin skin. I dealt with lots of difficult customers and point people so it's important to not take a lot of anger personally. If someone is soft hearted and easy to stress, I wouldn't reccomend this job to them.
