Very unique experience that offers a lot of insight into working in the hospital environment
What I wish was different
Communication was ineffective during onboarding and training.
There were too many contacts, and I found myself often repeating information. I also didn't feel very prepared after training to work the actual job. I think Scribes would benefit from shorter computer training and more on-site training.
Advice
Go with your gut. If you feel like you can do well in the ED, stick it out. If not, that's okay too. Just because you don't feel good about working in the ED doesn't have to mean you're giving up on a career in medicine.

Pay is low for the responsibility and steep learning curve.
Advice
Physassist is not a good company to work for. They know they can afford to offer cheap pay because pre-med students are desperate for clinical exposure. Get some exposure, but look for different opportunities after doing so.

What I liked
It is a one of a kind experience working along side physicians in the emergency department. I get to be up close with 20+ patients a shift in an acute care setting and it is a learning experience like no other for a pre med student.
What I wish was different
Shifts are 10-12 hours long, which requires you to have a full day available to work a shift, and availability is sometimes difficult with classes and other extracurriculars.
Advice
You will learn from this experience as much as you put in. If you take the initiative to understand what is happening with your patients then you can learn a lot about being a clinician.

What I liked
Being a medical scribe allowed me to gain first hand knowledge about the medical field and what actually goes on in an Emergency Room. This was the first time I was truly exposed to the medical field. I liked that I was able to walk into the patient's room with the physician and see what went on as well as complete the patient's chart and network with the physicians and other scribes.
What I wish was different
I wish the company was more considerate about their employees. I was expected to show up for a shift even if I was sick. I found that very unappealing because if we are there to help those who are sick, we shouldn't be sick ourselves.
Advice
I would definitely recommend this job if you are someone who wants to go to medical school. You will learn medical terminology, what it's like to work long shifts, and see what the daily operations of a physician in a hospital entails.

What I liked
Tons of experience working side by side with medical professionals. Saw a wide array of patients in the ED. Improved my medical terminology and gave me a lot of exposure to a healthcare setting.
What I wish was different
I wish I was compensated more for my time, however the experience is more important than a paycheck for me.
Advice
Keep an open mind and don't be discouraged if you don't know everything the physician is trying to tell you. It is a learning process and you will not know everything until you are a medical professional yourself. Do not be afraid to ask questions out of curiosity or necessity, as many of the providers are more than willing to assist you.
