Biology Research Intern

June - August 2021 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I really liked the hands on opportunities. I liked being able to learn helpful Biology techniques such as PCR and zebrafish dissection. I liked having other peers to collaborate and discuss project details. I liked that the research was conducted in person.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have gotten started with the project and the experimentation a lot sooner. I think that having a proposal and detailed method of action would have been helpful.

Advice

Try new things, it will open you up to new experiences and ideas.

Prospect Research Assistant

May 2019 • Los Angeles, CA

I was able to use my computer science background to experiment with how the Department of Advancement Services goes about conducting their research. I was able to strengthen my skills with Python, various Python frameworks, SQL, and Excel.

What I wish was different

Nothing! It was a very positive experience.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and experiment! The only reason I was able to get this job in the first place was because I frequently approached Oxy faculty for potential job opportunities. Furthermore, had I not challenged the fear of experimentation, I would not have been able to apply my computer science background to the job.
