Camp Counselor

June - August 2018 • Flagstaff, AZ

What I liked

I loved my job and working with the children.

What I wish was different

I wish the pay was more. Being a summer camp counselor is a very demanding job. Most weeks I worked 10 hours shifts and was responsible for 40-50 kids at once while only getting payed $9 an hour.

Advice

If you really love your job, pay has nothing to do with it. That is why I stayed with the job. The experience i got was unbelievable. I left that camp being a mom to almost over 100 kids.

Marketing Intern

January 2018 • Flagstaff, AZ

What I liked

I enjoyed working with programs I know in a calm environment with people that I get along with. It was an added bonus that the internship is on campus and that I got free meals.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to film more footage for Sodexo at the beginning of the summer rather than all at the end.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is that everyone should be looking for and pursuing internships that relate with their major.

Summer Planning Intern

March - August 2019 • Flagstaff, AZ

What I liked

I really enjoyed the team. The atmosphere is welcoming of new interns and is a great place to improve your personal skills. The onboarding system was easy and training was thorough. At the end of the summer, I truly felt that I had learned a lot that I can use in my career after graduation. I would highly recommend this internship for anyone wanting to work in events.

What I wish was different

I wish the hours had been a bit more consistent. From the application, it seemed that I would be working full time from the end of the school year until August. My hours were only full time until the first week of July and then went to part-time.

Advice

Be ready to learn fast and work hard. This is a real position and you are responsible for balancing your record-keeping and working with clients. May and June are very busy and you have to be able to handle the workload. Additionally, make sure that you have a few business casual outfits before you go full-time. You'll need them.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

August 2018 • Flagstaff, AZ

What I liked

Freedom. In the lab, I'm tasked with carrying out experiments at my own time and discretion. This fits very conveniently with my schedule. I was also able to suggest new methods for carrying out the lab research and was not stuck in a rut with boring work.

What I wish was different

I wish I was paid more. The work was very intellectually taxing and I could have started at Target for more.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask professors about what they're doing and if they're looking for research hands. The worst that could happen is you find the research boring and you move on. The best case scenario, you have a job to help pay the bills and you love what you do gaining valuable experience along the way.

Administrative Assistant

August 2018 • Flagstaff, AZ

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

Although finding a job after graduation can be tough and discouraging, not giving up is the best thing you can do. I had my interview for this position a couple days before moving back home five hours away. I had given up. Luckily though, a week after the interview, I was given the offer and found my way back. Key note: don't give up and be open minded about your opportunities.

Communications Coordinator

October 2018 • Flagstaff, AZ

What I liked

Everyone is extremely helpful and the employee benefits are fantastic. It is an awesome place to work for, very rewarding, and a beautiful location.

What I wish was different

I wish the on-boarding process had been a bit smoother. I had worked for the university 4 months prior and it meant I did not have to fill out the regular paperwork. Unfortunately we did not realize this until after I had been waiting for the on-boarding email for a week. It was not a bad experience, it was just the one negative in the process.

Advice

Start applying for jobs early, even if you think you aren't 100% qualified. Many employers are looking for a desire to work and a willingness to learn. Passion and enthusiasm go farther than you think, and most employers are willing to work with you to get you where you need to be for them, as long as you have some base knowledge and a willingness to learn. NAU is an excellent community to work for and I HIGHLY recommend it to everyone.
