Northern Arizona University (NAU)

Front Desk Receptionist

January 2018 • Flagstaff, AZ

What I liked

I really enjoy working for NAU. I liked my coworkers and managers a lot and it was a good and positive environment. I learned a lot about life in general such as benefits, insurance plans, payroll, etc. and also developed my professional skills

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been paid more/am paid more now. Although it is a student worker position, I think we do a lot of hard work and 8.75 is lower than the state and city minimum wage and it’s a little ridiculous.

Advice

I think any job you find, whether it’s over the summer or ongoing should interest you. It makes the job a lot easier especially if you are in a positive environment. I also think it’s important to find some way to make it relevant to what you want to do in your future so you can not only put it on your resume in a smart way but also gain experience.

Peer Mentor

August 2018 • Flagstaff, AZ

What I liked

I love working with First Year students and doing whatever I can to make sure that they succeed.

What I wish was different

I would like for the class to be more interactive than it is, but the professor will not listen to any of the recommendations that I have. I feel like people would enjoy it more, and that is how most, if not all, sociology classes are.

What I liked

What I liked most about the job was working with coworkers. The people I worked with we're helpful so it made the job go more smoothly as well as making our tasks faster and easier to complete.

What I wish was different

I wish the job paid more because it is a lot of work to be done for the low pay my co-workers and I receive.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share would be to prepare to work and lift a lot each shift. Get good sleep and eat well and drink lots of water to ensure each shift goes well.

July - August 2017 • Fairbanks, AK

What I liked

It was a life-changing experience. I loved working outside every day.

What I wish was different

I wouldn’t change anything.

Advice

Even if you don’t think you’re qualified for something, you never know what other opportunities could come up just by putting yourself out there. I was a freshman applying for this research gig amongst graduating seniors with way more experience than me. But forming a relationship with the grad students who were interviewing opened up other opportunities for me that allowed me to get some amazing field work experience.
