I love learning new topics and techniques we apply in the lab. We have so much control on what our projects can be about as long as it follows the lab title. For example, if you are in a genetic engineering lab, your project must have some aspect of genetic engineering involved.
What I wish was different
When first joined, I wish I was more involved with the graduate students and their projects so I can observe and learn more techniques early on.
Advice
Being in undergraduate research makes you be assertive and have time management skills. You need to let your PI know if you want to be involved in a project or learn new techniques within your lab. Being quiet and "going with the flow" does not make you get the most out of the experience.

Undergraduate Research Assistant
August 2018 • Flagstaff, AZ
What I liked
Freedom. In the lab, I'm tasked with carrying out experiments at my own time and discretion. This fits very conveniently with my schedule. I was also able to suggest new methods for carrying out the lab research and was not stuck in a rut with boring work.
What I wish was different
I wish I was paid more. The work was very intellectually taxing and I could have started at Target for more.
Advice
Don't be afraid to ask professors about what they're doing and if they're looking for research hands. The worst that could happen is you find the research boring and you move on. The best case scenario, you have a job to help pay the bills and you love what you do gaining valuable experience along the way.

Summer Planning Intern
March - August 2019 • Flagstaff, AZ
What I liked
I really enjoyed the team. The atmosphere is welcoming of new interns and is a great place to improve your personal skills. The onboarding system was easy and training was thorough. At the end of the summer, I truly felt that I had learned a lot that I can use in my career after graduation. I would highly recommend this internship for anyone wanting to work in events.
What I wish was different
I wish the hours had been a bit more consistent. From the application, it seemed that I would be working full time from the end of the school year until August. My hours were only full time until the first week of July and then went to part-time.
Advice
Be ready to learn fast and work hard. This is a real position and you are responsible for balancing your record-keeping and working with clients. May and June are very busy and you have to be able to handle the workload. Additionally, make sure that you have a few business casual outfits before you go full-time. You'll need them.
