What I liked

I loved making connections and friendships with both my team and incoming students. Working on a team over the summer strengthened my leadership, communication, and professional skills. I really enjoyed doing this position a second time around and communicating with incoming students, assisting group activities, and planning welcome week with over 500 students attending. It opened up new opportunities for me and I'm glad that I pushed myself to do a job that pushed me out of my comfort zone.

Reseach Assistant

What I liked

I liked being introduced to the research process, and working in a team with other science majors. I was able to get to know faculty and other students in STEM, while also getting experience in the lab!

What I wish was different

It was only 8 weeks in the summer so our research project was a little rushed for this reason. The first few weeks were getting familiar with the literature, lab equipment, and procedures; we only had the last few weeks to start the project and we could have used more time.

Advice

If you can try research at all, do it! This will help you realize if it is for you or not, so start early in your college career.

I really liked working with JSS because it taught me a lot about self growth and how to work with students and teach online.

What I wish was different

I really wish it was in person of course, but it certainly was a great learning experience.

Advice

One piece of advice is be willing to ask for ideas from other interns, and always be willing to share your own. We learned so much from each other in the process.

Absolutely nothing. The hours are very flexible, the people who run the office are extremely nice, and the job just presents many opportunities to improve communication skills.

What I liked

This experience allowed me to grow as a researcher and global citizen. I networked and worked with Chinese nationals to gain a deeper understanding of the research topic. It was an amazing experience to go to a China with an organized research focus.

I wish there were more opportunities to encourage NCC students to get involved in research.

Student Research Assistant

What I liked

I liked the connections I made with the Guatemalan people. I lived with a host family during my time there and was able to share stories and life experiences with them, which definitely expanded my knowledge of Guatemalan life and culture. I believe I am a more well-rounded and globalized person because of this experience and formed invaluable relationships with the people I came into contact with.

What I liked

It was a great experience to learn from my research advisor and write complex code under his guidance. The problems I had to solve were not easy to understand, so the solutions were fun and very rewarding.

There was nothing specifically that I would change. I had a great experience and was lucky to have an advisor who trusted me to work on my own time.

Advice

Definitely take advantage of research opportunities if you have the chance. Doing research forced me to take responsibility for my work and really put in the effort to make it happen.
