MIKE Program

Youth Volunteer

February - June 2018 • Portland, OR

What I liked

I really liked being able to work with my local community to help educate them about what a healthy lifestyle looks like. You spend about five months with the same class of students but are specifically mentoring only 4-5 for the term. While with the youth, there are a couple of field trips that you attend with them. One includes going to a dialysis center nearby and hearing from a patient and their experience of needing blood transfusions.

What I wish was different

Overall I think the only thing that I wish I had known prior is that there are a few extra trainings involved and you do need to set more time aside for the program.

Advice

Even though you spend approximately an hour and a half with the students a week, it does not include the additional training outside of class. Overall I highly recommend volunteering with the MIKE Program. Dr Cheryl Neal is a driven woman with the passion to help the youth develop healthy eating habits and promote them to be health advocates for themselves and future generations.
