Everyone I worked with was kind and gave clear instruction. Questions were always encouraged. Rotating between the different departments gave me great insight into what a civil engineer does. I gained tons of experience with different softwares and can't wait to bring what I've learned to my classes next semester.

I wish I could have spent more time in some of the departments.
Advice
Having an open mind with a solid work ethic is a great start. Ask questions and learn as much as possible. The people here are very experienced and are more than happy to teach if asked.

Civil Engineering Intern

What I liked
I was very happy with WOODPATEL's decision to have me work with them during the summer. The company strictly enforced Covid-19 guidelines which allowed me to feel safe when going into work every-other-day. During my short time working, I was impressed with how approachable and friendly the entire staff was at WOODPATEL. I also really enjoyed the initial exposure to basic topics in Autocad Civil 3D, especially since I have never been exposed to a program like that before. Even though it was small, it was exciting to have the opportunity to design ramps and sidewalks that could potentially be built in the real world.
What I wish was different
While I realize that my internship experience was unusual due to Covid-19 and veered away from WOODPATEL's traditional internship program, I wish that I was given more of a constructed plan each day. I was typically given tasks early in the morning and once I completed them, I was usually left with an uncertainty of what I could do for the rest of the day. I would reach out to my mentors but they were typically busy with their own projects to provide me with further direction. I feel if my days were more coordinated and planned out, I would have been able to contribute more to the team and learn more about civil engineering and the company. Again, I realize that this year's internship was not typical and I'm grateful for the experience I was given.
Advice
Ask questions! Everyone working at WOODPATEL is extremely knowledgeable on civil engineering topics. I found that most employees enjoyed answering and elaborating on my questions which provided me with a better understanding on how the profession works.
