I loved how the staff at WJZ gave me several opportunities to learn and experience different aspects of the newsroom. I contributed and wrote over 25 articles published to their website; I stood in for the traffic reporter during a practice newscast in the new WJZ set; I assisted scheduling daily stories, reporters and photographers; I conducted two solo interviews for a story; I wrote a script for a story about a new protective helmet technology from a company called Defend Your Head; and I completed a reporter package for the story.
What I wish was different
I wish I was there for a longer period of time because I enjoyed my experience so much.
Advice
I would say that even if you aren't necessarily interested in the news industry, there is still a lot to learn from working in a newsroom. It's fast paced and you have the opportunity to collaborate with several people. I would also advise people to try whatever they can and get experience through internships and jobs because everything you learn adds to your skill set.
