Wiley

Editorial Analytics Intern

June - August 2018 • Medford, MA

What I liked

The work environment was very relaxed and the people were friendly. Almost everyone was approachable and willing to help me when I had questions. Work was challenging but not overwhelming.

What I wish was different

The internship was not as structured as it was portrayed, and it was monotonous at times. The work is more business-oriented rather than writing oriented. Also, there isn't a lot of company pride.

Advice

You will get a lot of money for not doing a ton of hard work, but it could be monotonous and there is a lot of silo-ing between departments. Be sure to network with and make friends in the business.

Sourcing & Procurement Intern

June - August 2018 • Hoboken, NJ

What I liked

I really liked the company culture and how innovative Wiley is. My boss gave me assignments that were challenging and achievable. I learned how to work in a team environment and I picked up a new skill (VBA Coding).

What I wish was different

I wish I had more excel experience going into my internship. I noticed that my colleagues were proficient in this area, giving me a big disadvantage.

Advice

Working hard and being a team player got me the internship and potentially a job.

WEL Content Management Intern

June - August 2018 • Hoboken, NJ

What I liked

My colleagues were wonderful, and the experience was structured week by week for the broader intern program.

What I wish was different

Advice

Educational publishing in a large corporation like Wiley isn't the kind of work I thought it would be. As lovely of an experience as it was, I found that I was learning pseudo tech skills (XML, etc) rather than using the editing skills I had learned in my jobs as a Spectator editor and English major. A lot of the full time jobs, likewise, are not editing related. So if you're looking into publishing specifically for the literary element, it's probably not the job for you.
