What I liked

Experience mapping out an area, starting an ongoing experiment to see the benefits and efficiency of the greenroof. Loved to teach others about the ongoing research and giving tours. and learning more about the roof.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish would be different would be that I'd be there for a longer amount of time.

Advice

If you're doing something you love and that genuinely interests you, the hard work will be end it in the end.

Assistant Researcher

What I liked

I personally loved the one-on-one training I received from my professor in the West Chester University Nutrition Department. Dr. Amir allowed me to work on an on-going research project, that was based on vitamin D/calcium deficiencies in the Middle East and North Africa regions and the integration of the Teff grain to aid in replenishing those deficiencies. I gathered background information for the logistics behind the biochemical data and aided in the overall fluidity of the paper so that it could be well-understood by anyone interested in the topic. I was able to incorporate a lot of the technical information that I gathered from my later nutrition courses into the paper and was able to impact changes to the study that made me honestly feel important, which is what I personally believe everyone should strive for in their career. Dr. Amir also let me work on another on-going Research Project regarding disordered eating patterns in the Cystic Fibrosis Community. This was a study that we and another professor-student duo developed and received funding for from West Chester University. We recently had the pleasure of speaking about it on Research Day here at WCU and is currently in the process of being evaluated by the IRB. Once it is passed, next semester we will continue the study and be able to present it next year at a Cystic Fibrosis research convention in Nashville, Tennessee.

What I wish was different

I wished I could have had more on-hand experience with developing some of the research, but I was honored and excited to be apart of the process the entire time anyways.

Advice

Manage your time well, and don't be afraid to ask questions that you think are unimportant. No question, no matter how small, is inferior to another when it comes to research development or your own, coherent, understanding of an issue. I can tell you that regretting to ask a question that impedes the process of your research is a lot worse than confronting the fear of what response you may receive in the first place. Understanding this will help you develop more of a tenacious attitude in whatever work experience you will have in the future; and in turn, will help you further your career and your life.

Network as much as possible on campus. When my expected internship fell through I was able to turn to administrators I knew in the Office of Student Leadership and Involvement to find summer work.

Work study

What I liked

I enjoy learning new things with the nursing department while being a student worker in the health field. I also enjoyed being apart of teaching students how to be personable and practice dealing with living patients rather than always practicing with a mannequin.

What I wish was different

I wish the atmosphere would have been slightly different involving the faculty member's. Some may be great professors, but tend to sow lack of experience when working or dealing with POC students or workers and can be a bit noticeable.

Advice

Working in this department is very informative, and can help you find many resources or networking connection even if you are not a nursing major.

Undergraduate Researcher

What I liked

I enjoyed the element of working on my own schedule, and being able to set my own deadlines the majority of the time. It undoubtably increased my work ethic and intrinsic motivation.

What I wish was different

I am not the strongest in mathematics, and the content I worked with was very statistics-heavy, something I had never taken a class on and proved to be very difficult to pick up.

Advice

Working on your own schedule is drastically different than it appears to be. It is extremely messy and chaotic at first, but eventually you learn to set your own deadlines and meet them to avoid the chaos and stress.
