COVID-19 Community Education Empowerment Internship
May - July 2021 • New York City, NY
What I liked
I liked the information we learned from diverse educators and medical professionals regarding the COVID 19 pandemic and the importance of vaccinations across all communities. I had a great experience making my own project and seeing how it can better the community vaccination rates.
What I wish was different
I wish the internship was longer and that we met more times to organize our project and change plans.
Advice
Do not be afraid to ask questions regarding anything so that when these questions are presented to you, you can have some background knowledge.

What I liked
I loved being surrounded by a supportive community of faculty from Weill Cornell and 28 other minority pre-med students who inspired me everyday through the T-SRF Program. I really enjoyed how the program's focus of healthcare disparities and equity was incorporated in every class lecture and speaker event that we attended. This was my first clinical research experience which was a great challenge.
What I wish was different
Each person was assigned a faculty mentor and mine was very busy during the duration of the program. This was my first clinical research experience and so I do wish that I could have interacted with my faculty mentor more.
Advice
This program matched exactly what I wanted to do for this summer and I almost did not apply because I thought it would be too competitive. Go after what your passions are and don't shy away from opportunities that may seem out of reach!

What I liked
It's hard to say no to a summer in NYC. Overall, the team at Weill Cornell was encouraging and willing to teach. While I just got my feet wet in medical research, it was certainly an amazing and involving experience.
What I wish was different
It was an unpaid position.
Advice
If you are doing an unpaid internship, it better be an amazing place.

What I liked
Great people, great research project.
What I wish was different
No independent project.
Advice
Get on your mentor's good side, they'll buy you lunch every once in a while. In all seriousness, you can always impress at an interview if you read their work beforehand and discuss it with them.

What I liked
I had the opportunity to work with such intelligent and creative people as a colleague rather than just an intern. I got to work hands on with real patients and learn how to interact on a professional level while exploring a field I have ever worked in before. Opening the door into research allowed me gain confidence in a field I was previously intimidated by.
What I wish was different
While the experience in research this summer was amazing, I wished to have had the opportunity to work in the main research setting, however this was inaccessible to me because of my location. The poster another intern did for a presentation at the end of the summer that displayed our findings was interesting and I would hope to do one in the future, since I didn't this passed summer.
Advice
While a new job in a professional setting may seem scary at first, you should never be afraid to ask question or go out of your comfort zone. The people there took on interns to receive extra help but also to teach us about their field. Asking questions will make you seem engaged in their work along with expressing eagerness for any task they ask or don't ask you to do, which could help make connections for the future.

Advice
Do NOT be afraid to reach out to those you know in your field of interest. And don’t let an intimidating title like “director” deter you from sending an email. The people you are contacting have been in your shoes once upon a time and are usually very excited to help someone who shares their interests! At the end of the day, you need to have the desire and motivation to send the email or make the call that could change your future.
