Communicate well and often with your coworkers and managers. I let my boss know when I was being given too much work by others around me and needed to reduce my workload, as well as when I was in a slow spell and wanted extra. I also asked for projects that used skills I wasn't previously using to diversify my work and give me additional tasks I wanted experience with.
