What I liked

Self directed research and ability to work with a faculty mentor which fostered both professional and personal relationships with faculty who could potentially help guide you in your educational career and beyond. Access to GRE prep materials and time allotted to study. Access to conferences, poster prep materials and essential graduate school information. Weekly stipend and moderately flexible hours. Helpful staff and peer collaboration.

What I wish was different

Weekly seminars were sometimes not useful, they could be replaced with something more interactive and beneficial, the staff is working on that for next summer!

Advice

Use every resource available and don’t take it for granted! They truly WANT you to succeed to achieve your goals.

What I liked

McNairs Scholars Program was great because it allowed me to grow professionally and individually. It opened my mind to things I would have never considered had I not been apart of this program.

What I wish was different

I wish the program was longer. It’s such a great experience that you do not want it to end

Advice

I would advice scholars to prepare their research during the academic year before the summer starts.

Student Researcher

June - July 2018 • Middletown, CT

What I liked

The accommodation provided and shared with other McNair student researchers allowed me to network and help me learn about other fields of research. I also enjoyed the fact that I was able to fully engage in my research.

What I wish was different

I do wish the accommodation was closer to the research lab.

Advice

It was a wonderful experience. I suggest setting up your project before beginning so that you will be able to begin working right away. I also suggest trying to engage more with other scholars- it is a far more enriching when you can spend your time with other scholars.

Undergraduate Researcher

May 2018 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

I loved being able to research an area I am highly interested in, helping me prepare for graduate research.

What I wish was different

Wish there was more time to conduct research - a lot to do in a short amount of time.

Advice

Plan ahead on your research methods and make sure you know what interests you. It is very helpful to experience undergraduate research if you plan on attending graduate school or pursuing a research field later.
