Cashier

August - September 2019 • Orem, UT

What I liked

Positive coworkers, chill environment, working with students my age (coworkers and customers), on campus, worked with school schedule

What I wish was different

People were too strict or stressed out about unnecessary things. Sometimes management focused on the wrong things to be picky about. Even though I was temporarily there I wish I were treated more than just a number. No one knew my name, not even the management, so I didn't feel needed or important. Also I live farther away so I had to wake up really early and leave early to make it on time for a job that wasn't giving me enough hours to pay for my gas money. That's not their fault though, I just wish it were different because I'm not a morning person.

Advice

Everyone is really nice and the job is easy. It's not a life changing career but it's a good starter college job. My advice is don't be afraid to try out a new job because even if you don't stick with it you can get good experience and you don't know what it will lead to.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

June - August 2019 • Orem, UT

What I liked

The professor that I worked with was understanding of my level of knowledge and helped me to grow as a software developer and researcher. I felt that my thoughts mattered to my professor and that it was less of me just doing his bidding and more of a collaboration.

What I wish was different

I wish that there had been a little more structure into the work that we were performing. There were times where the research goal was either unknown or changing far too often. I also felt that communication could have been better and/or more frequent.

Advice

Voice your thoughts! During my research, there was a moment where I felt that we were missing a great opportunity to present our research and to further our work. After it was discussed with the professor, we were able to make a plan and achieve the new goal. I felt that this made my experience more rewarding.

I absolutely loved how flexible this job was for school schedule. I loved the opportunity to collaborate with my professor on a more personal level. I loved networking with other students. These experience benefitted me in gaining new skills to use in my future career as an educator.

What I wish was different

The process with HR at UVU was a bit difficult and tedious. I didn't have much direction from my professor and HR themselves in completing all the requirements to get paid. Certain emails were suppose to be sent to me within certain times when in reality they did not.

Advice

When accepting a student job for research with a professor, ensure you are asking enough questions about the HR process for getting paid. Also, take these opportunities granted by professors to work with them one-on-one. This will strengthen your relationship with them, thus allowing you to get a lot more out of class.
