UT Health

Information Research Science Intern

June - July 2019 • Brownsville, TX

What I liked

The community felt like family. They were my mentors, but I felt as if I could approach them without feeling scared.

What I wish was different

I wish it would have been a longer period of time.

Advice

Do an internship to see what interests you. I went in as a science intern, but I loved the data and statistics part more than the science of it, so I pursued a degree in finance

UT Health/Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas Summer Undergraduate Fellow

June - August 2018 • Houston, TX

What I liked

I loved having a group of undergraduates with whom to share this summer. The CPRIT program did a great job pulling together a diverse group of over twenty students to spend the summer here in Houston, and enhanced the experience with Innovation courses, Speechcraft sessions, and the final elevator speech competition.

What I wish was different

I would have loved for us to have a more extended orientation at the beginning of the program, to get to know each other better and to understand the aims of the Innovation courses more clearly as well.

Advice

Make the most of it! The mentors are incredible, Texas Medical Center and the surrounding city of Houston are beautiful, and the people you meet are from different parts of the state, country, and world!
