General Reporting

May - August 2018 • Logan, UT

What I liked

Hands-on experience as a news reporter/journalist, learned strategies for effective story telling, experience with technology (recording, editing, etc). They give you plenty of opportunities to cover stories you're passionate about, find your beat, and be creative.

What I wish was different

Scheduling was difficult with work and school. Even if you set aside time to be in the station to work that may be outside of when someone can do an interview or when you need to be somewhere to cover an event. I also didn't feel the training was super thorough. I had a lot of gaps in my knowledge and had to learn as I went. I think I could've saved a lot of time and energy had I been trained beforehand. My stories would've been stronger altogether as well.

Advice

You must be a self-starter and self-learner. Your supervisors don't have the time, energy, or resources to fully train you. I wouldn't take a position at UPR unless your schedule can be flexible and you know for a fact you can meet frequent deadlines.

I wish I'd had more time to do all the cool projects I wanted to work on!

Advice
