USU Office of Research

Communications Assistant

February 2017 - April 2019 • Logan, UT

What I liked

The hours are very flexible and the office is really good about working with your schedule. You get to focus on projects that will you develop whatever skills or knowledge that will help you with your long-term goals. I also was assigned to some projects that taught me skills that I didn't realize I was interested in, but are now really important to me. If you are interested in communications, but are still exploring all of the possibilities available to you, this job is a great starting point.

What I wish was different

There were some times where it felt easy to fall through the cracks. Be prepared to put yourself out there in order to get the experiences you really want. You need to be able to jump up and volunteer for projects. Don't be afraid to express your opinion early on in the position.

Advice

You will get what you put into the position. The job is so flexible that you can take on lots of different kinds of projects, which can be intimidating to begin with. You have to be the type of person that is motivated to work independently. Keep an open mind and try a little bit of everything. You might learn some things about yourself that will affect how you apply for positions later.
