USG

IT Operations Intern

May - August 2021 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

The people. My manager was incredible, he treated me like a friend and encouraged me to do my best work. I got to have a viable impact to real world problems and help the company advance and grow.

What I wish was different

I wish it would have been more structured. Lot of times I did not know what to do with my time.

Advice

Have a desire to learn and ask as many questions as possible. People are there to help you but you need to ask to recieve.

Project engineer

May - December 2019 • Jacksonville, FL

What I liked

In the field experience. As a project engineer you are encouraged to get into the production line to understand the process better.

What I wish was different

Housing assistance is offered. However, trying to find a place for 7 months is a challenge. I would encourage USG to work with a apartment complex and provide a location for the students to rent from.

Advice

Be aware that finding a 7 month lease will be a challenge.

Project Engineer Co-op

May - December 2019 • Bridgeport, AL

What I liked

It was interesting to be involved in and lead a variety of projects from start to finish.

What I wish was different

Because of the location, I was the only co-op there. I did overlap with the spring co-op for about 1.5 months, but I really wish there had been more opportunities to engage with other students instead of just full-time employees.

Advice

Just a warning, the role is relatively oriented toward mechanical engineers. They do hire multiple other majors, but as a chemical engineering student, I didn't have a lot of background knowledge; this might be a turn-off to some interested. I did learn a lot along the way because of this.

Board Line Operator

May - August 2019 • Sigurd, UT

What I liked

It was fun and I earned a lot of money. It was a good experience and I learned a lot.

What I wish was different

The hours were really busy and I worked 6 days a week, every week.

Advice

Summer jobs are a great way to pave a path towards internships and future jobs.

Student Fitness Assistant

December 2018 • Kennesaw, GA

What I liked

Flexible hours for the most part, nice management, very nice members. Pretty easy job overall.

What I wish was different

I wish the pay was higher. But it worked for my needs for the time being.

Advice

If you don’t enjoy fitness, this job isn’t for you.

Project Engineer Co-op

June 2018 • Bridgeport, AL

What I liked

Its a long list. The people are amazing. Everyone is very nice and happy to help. The project work is interesting, and keeps me busy. I really like that I am treated just like any other project engineer, albeit some of my projects aren't the most important (but that is due to the time they take). It's been very easy to get involved and learn as much as I can.

What I wish was different

One thing is that I wish I had found a place to stay that wasn't on a lease. It adds a bit more of a headache to try and find a sublet later in the co-op. I wish that USG helped a bit more with housing, but the moving stipend did help a bit.

Advice

Get involved. The more active you are, both in and outside of work, the better everything will be. You get to know your co-workers better and also find more friends outside of work. A work-life balance is very important.
