US Fish and Wildlife Service

Digital Media Outreach Specialist

May - August 2022 • Leavenworth, WA

What I liked

I loved being able to meet a bunch of new people within the field and seeing more of what people in this office do. I also liked that I was able to design my own project list to work on while doing the internship. Everyone was super kind and willing to share what it was that they do.

What I wish was different

The only complaints I really had had nothing to do with the internship itself, but the housing situation (as I had to move out of state for the summer).

Advice

Start connecting with people as soon as you can. And say yes to every opportunity (as long as you have the bandwidth).

Directorate Fellow

June - September 2021 • Portland, OR

What I liked

Even though it was remote, I was able to meet a lot of people all across the whole USFWS network through video calls. I also felt supported and that my work was valued.

What I wish was different

There was a little bit of disorganization in terms of payment and reimbursements because USFWS contracted the American Conservation Experience to do this.

Advice

Talk to as many people as possible in different roles to get a better sense of what you might like to do in the future, especially since the fellowship comes with hiring authority.

What I liked

I like how I was able to get a real world experience of how it is working in the IT department.

What I wish was different

I wished it had been in person, and not remote work.

Advice

That working in the IT department is always different each day.
