US Army War College

Research Intern

May - August 2019 • Carlisle, PA

What I liked

I loved learning about the daily life of working for the government and learning about my research topic. It was also great doing the professional development sessions to learn about the different jobs and aspects of the government

What I wish was different

Maybe being less of an independent research and more involvement with the interns

Advice

Come in positive and try to find passion in what you’re learning. Don’t be afraid to ask questions when confused and try your best to network with anyone you meet. Take advantage of the opportunities around you

What I liked

It was great to get to work with professors from the War College. I was encouraged to take the research in the direction I wanted and got to pursue my interests within the topic, although this was not common amount the interns

What I wish was different

Obviously, I wish the experience had been paid. Additionally, I found the intern seminar series to be generally unhelpful

Advice

Understand that this is a research internship and that all you will be doing all summer is reading and writing. If you really enjoy that, then this will be a great internship for you however, if you do not enjoy reading and research I wouldn’t suggest this internship. Also, take advantage of the connections the War College has to offer

What I liked

I liked exposing myself to a new environment and committing to researching a topic that was somewhat removed from my academic background. The interns and supervisors that I worked with were incredibly smart and driven, which created an atmosphere that challenged me and pushed me to do my best.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to work on more projects dealing with varied regions. Since I was researching civil-military relations and military coups, I focused a lot of my time on case studies of Thailand and Brazil, but it could have been interesting for me to do an overview of many cases instead of in-depth research on just two.

Advice

Don't be afraid to reach out to faculty and students! The ones that I met with were more than happy to share their personal backgrounds and career paths and give me advice on masters programs and job searches.

What I liked

Working at the Peacekeeping and Stability Institute all summer, taught me how to network, and operate on a busy schedule every week. I learned a lot every day, talking to different people within the institution. I liked how some of the seminars were open to us interns. We had the option to attend various ceremonies at the barracks. I enjoy working with my mentor on my project.

What I wish was different

I liked all the aspect of the internhip I wish I was paid.

Advice

It helped me with my public skills abilities, I meat people from so many different department whiting the US government. If you are interested in stability operations or working with the people that make policies and doctrine for it is the place for you.

What I liked

- Opportunity to listen to various higher echelon military personnel such as the Army Chief of Staff, and various other Combatant Commands. - All personnel were very helpful and willing to help at any capacity.

What I wish was different

- I did not have a fixed project. Instead I had various projects - I would of like more structure. - Receiving pay.

Advice

Come in with no expectations, keep an open mind and you will greatly benefit from the experience.
