What I liked

I liked shadowing a 2LT in the Army and getting to plan and execute training. I got to spend 2 weeks supervising soldiers as they went through the Bradley fighting vehicle gunnery course. The other week was spent doing administrative work in a garrison environment.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had gotten to stay longer and observe more of the training that the Active duty Army does.

High School JROTC Drill Competition

What I liked

I volunteer to help grade at the bi-monthly, semi-annual, and annual competitions. I enjoy working with the students in JROTC program. You can tell by their performance they work hard and practice daily.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more active duty military volunteers. Its a great experience and a lot of people are missing out.

It was a really great time, I got to help observe testing, run analysis, and coordinate further testing events. The people are amazing and wonderful to work with.

This summer I wish there was more testing and less reports, but reports are important and essential

Be flexible. Having flexibility allows for a higher possibility of having more opportunity for great experiences. Also being proactive helps build your reputation.

Because it is considered mission essential, I was unable to adjust my schedule to be off for class in the evenings.

Variety of tasks; ability to leave base and visit local towns; ample opportunities for training (foreign language, IT, military-specific skills).

What I wish was different

The Army offers rapport-building language classes in several languages; unfortunately, Albanian (predominant here) is not one of them.

Advice

Make the most of it! I'm full-time Army, but this was also an incredible opportunity for part-time National Guard and Reserve soldiers.
