Urbanity Dance

Community and Education Intern

June - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I had a supervisor that cared a lot about my personal goals for the summer and for the future. She really tailored my experience to make it beneficial for both of us. I also gained a lot of insight into how a small, quickly-growing nonprofit runs, how to increase accessibility within an organization, and the challenges of running an arts-focused organization. I was given a lot of responsibility and was required to take initiative for a variety of tasks and projects.

What I wish was different

Not much! I wish it had been paid :)

Advice

Apply for SIE money!! That's the only reason I was able to take this position. Be sure to ask a lot of questions about what you will be doing on a day to day basis before you commit to a position. A company can sound fancy, but if all you'll be doing is photocopying papers, it's probably not worth your time.

What I liked

I appreciated the amount of independence I was given in terms of contributions to the company's space. I was given a lot of room to be creative.

What I wish was different

I wish that without taking away from the independence I had, that there were more deadlines and a bit more structure as to what was expected.

Advice

Take initiative! It took me a while to really understand how much my supervisor genuinely wanted me to take control and lead projects. She was extremely trusting and I feel that I was too hesitant and cautious when it came to making decisions and finalizing projects.
