Undergraduate Research Assistant

June 2020 • Burlington, VT

What I liked

I have loved working under Dr. Hernan. The research is incredibly fulfilling and I have felt sufficiently mentored throughout.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had not been having to work around pandemic precautions this semester.

Advice

I would recommend that all undergrads get involved in research as early as possible. It's easily one of the most valuable experiences I've ever had.

GIS

May 2020 • Burlington, VT

What I liked

I liked the flexibility of being remote

What I wish was different

The GIS software was not able to be downloaded on my laptop and so I had to use the online version and the online version doesn’t have the same capacities which made mapping difficult

Advice

Have fun with it! Making maps can be extremely fun but make sure to give adequate time to complete your projects

Orientation Leader

May - June 2019 • Burlington, VT

What I liked

I liked the community, and my fellow OLs and how we grew together in our leadership roles. I also liked having the opportunity to guide the new students and their families through their first few days on campus. It's an experience that I won't forget, and relationships I've never had prior

What I wish was different

Having to eat less Dominos.

Advice

On days off when the OLs are to eat on their own, you can get an 1/8 or a 1/4 lb of lunch meat at the Market down town which is satisfyingly enough for a couple sandwiches if you want to eat cheap. They also had baguette rolls, just the right size for a sandwich. Excellent when I didn't feel like eating out.

Digitization

June 2019 • Burlington, VT

What I liked

Working with my professor and being hands on with specimen in the Herbarium

What I wish was different

I got this job because I was forced to leave a different job because of personal safety. I wish it didn’t have to be that way.

Advice

Working in the college gives a different perspective than just going as a student!

Orientation Leader

May - June 2019 • Burlington, VT

What I liked

I made genuine connections with star members across UVM who I can rely on to help me network myself! They are also great genuine people who I really enjoyed connecting with. This internship helped foster my understanding of social justice and its role on campus.

What I wish was different

I wish that it had started right at the end of finals that we didn't have to go home for a week in between and that it ended on a Friday so it was easier to start another job at home.

Advice

I would totally engross yourself in the experience and make genuine connections with the staff! Because of the connections I made I was able to get the internship I have now and love.

Orientation Leader

June - July 2019 • Burlington, VT

What I liked

Perks of networking with different campus resources, bonding with other student leaders from different areas of study, meeting incoming students and mentoring them, getting a sense of the behind-the-scenes of one of the most crucial parts to any student's college journey.

What I wish was different

More reasonable hours, more pay, more days off to recuperate.

Advice

Be prepared to give it your all- it is a lot of work but being an OL is also very rewarding. You will learn more about the institution but also about yourself as well. The training retreat that takes place holds a special place in my heart.

Geomorphology Researcher

June 2018 • Burlington, VT

What I liked

working in the field that I'm studying and working hands on in a lab with people I get along with well

What I wish was different

I took a summer class as well, and I wish I'd known how time consuming it was to complete 3 credits in 4 weeks so that I could plan my summer better

Advice

Prioritize. Summer goes by fast and it's important to find a good balance between getting things done and decompressing - you don't want to already be burnt out when classes start in August.

I appreciated how personalized my internship experience was. I worked one-on-one with one of the grad students on one of his research project and then I got feedback from the professor I worked with on a report I wrote on the data.
