What I liked

Everyone I worked with was super nice. The job was interesting, and I learned new skills. It was really flexible for my hours as a student, and being a work study program helped me with tuition.

What I wish was different

That we had a bit more funding or flexibility when having to repair equipment. These were issues that concerned the school board and the private companies, but it took awhile to get the main paper cutter fixed. Other than that, COVID-19.

Advice

The task could be a bit repetitive, but if that doesn't bother you, great!

Summer Camp Instructor

May - August 2019 • Kingston, RI

What I liked

This summer, I had the opportunity to teach tech-related topics to kids. I really felt like I was doing important work by introducing students to technical topics like programming. Technology is such an important part of our society, so I feel like the work I did could have a huge impact on the students. I love feeling like I helped these kids gain unique experiences which might help them decide what they want to do in the future.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish was different is that I wish our scope had been bigger. With more students and instructors, we could have had a greater impact on our community.

Advice

For those involved in tech (computer science, data science, IT, etc.) teaching can be a great way to learn new things. Even though it may not be quite as technical as an internship, teaching technical topics can really cement your knowledge of concepts/skills, while also benefiting those you have the opportunity to teach.
