I really enjoyed the opportunity to conduct research because it allowed me to explore and write about a topic to raise awareness and stress the importance of equity in housing.
What I wish was different
I wish I had more time so that I could have connected with Govenor Newsome to have him comment on my findings.

Undergraduate Researcher
March 2020 • Davis, CA
What I liked
I liked that my research (which was writing a Python script to analyze data we had collected before the pandemic) could be done entirely virtually. Additionally, I liked that my lab mentor and I met weekly so that I could stay motivated to finish weekly tasks.
What I wish was different
I wish I could have gone back into the lab to take some more data, but of course that will not be possible for a while.
Advice
I would highly recommend taking notes during lab meetings (if applicable) to keep track of all tasks. Additionally, taking breaks is very important, and I often find that taking just a 15-minute break sometimes allows me to become much more productive than before the break.

Chemistry Research Intern
June - August 2018 • Davis, CA
What I liked
The lab I worked in this summer was a perfect match for me. Our research in the lab focused on analytical chemistry with an emphasis on infant nutrition and biomarkers using a number of mass spectrometry methods. I was able to do my own study on breast-milk proteins and glycoproteins because of the vital role they play in infants' lives by providing nutrition and aiding in the defense against pathogens. Since there is very little quantitative information on the post-translational modification (PTM) glycosylation, my project focused on the the quantification of human milk proteins and their site specific glycosylation. This experience allowed me to decide that I would like to continue to pursue a career in pediatric research.
What I wish was different
The duration of the program could be longer.
Advice
Use different summer experiences to help shape decisions for your career
