United Nations Population Fund

Programme Intern

March - June 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

This internship was right in the midst of United Nations Headquarters. My boss was incredibly knowledgeable and provided so many opportunities to learn more about the United Nations and the organizational structure of it. I also learned more about ERP systems in a business setting.

What I wish was different

I wish maybe I had a more creative role in writing or editing. The day-to-day work was somewhat menial, but the overall experience was so valuable.

Advice

I would advise that you find roommates to live with, and accept every networking opportunity available.

Advocacy Intern

May - August 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

This internship perfectly fit my interests because it existed at the intersection of domestic politics and international issues. We worked with offices on Capitol Hill and other Washington stakeholders to communicate the urgent need for funding and support for UNFPA worldwide.

What I wish was different

In my previous internships I enjoyed having a group of other interns to work alongside. In this office, I was the only intern which was sometimes isolating. It did, however, allow me to become closer to the people I worked with.

Advice

Building a strong personal network, and keeping up with those connections, is the most important thing! I was referred for this internship by a friend at Occidental, and now I am confident I will be able to find a job in Washington upon graduation because of the connections I made and have since fostered.
