Engineering Intern

June - August 2021 • Reading, PA

What I liked

Worked in a small team who were very friendly and willing to answer any questions I had. Was given real world design work that our team needed to get done instead of unimportant busy work. I gained a lot of experience in AutoCAD/Civil3D, gas utility simulation software, GIS, writing technical reports, estimating project costs, preparing construction drawings, and so much more. Was also able to work remotely and come into the office on a as-needed basis which was definitely a plus. Also got into the field to observe pipeline construction and better understand how in office planning translated to the actual jobsite.

What I wish was different

HR onboarding was a nightmare. After accepting my offer, they were almost impossible to get a hold of and I had no idea whether I would be working remotely or in office until the day before I started my job. Also, my issued laptop did not have all the software I needed from the beginning and it was a pain trying to get it all installed.

Advice

Be prepared to learn a lot on the job. I came in with very little engineering experience and left feeling like I was ready to step into a full time position. Also ask questions, you're not inconveniencing anyone. It's more of an inconvenience if your work is being delayed because you're trying to figure out something that anyone else could easily answer for you.
