Driver

June 2018 - August 2019 • Davis, CA

What I liked

I had such a fun job! I loved being qualified to drive single-deck buses and later becoming qualified to drive double-deck buses (even the vintage ones!). It was a once-in-a-lifetime chance and I went for it. I have no regrets.

What I wish was different

The management. They’re mostly good people, and it wasn’t bad enough to the point where I wanted to quit, but it was hard knowing that the system isn’t the most equitable.

Advice

Train during the summer, not during the school year.

Transit Driver

June 2019 • Davis, CA

What I liked

This job provided me with a Commercial Driver's License and flexible hours with the highest pay on campus. The Commercial License is a valuable tool to have because there are always positions available for bus and truck drivers even when my professional field may be scarce of jobs. You can work from 12-39 hours per week and it's very easy to get shifts covered or move them around, which makes this a wonderful job to have while taking classes.

What I wish was different

The training process takes from 10-15 weeks to obtain the license and be fully prepared to drive buses on your own. This is unavoidable, but worth it.

Advice

This is a challenge! It may be frightening at first but it is a valuable skill and a wonderful confidence booster. This job requires independence and a high level of responsibility and accountability.
