The environment was and is welcoming and inclusive. All the needs for me to do the job were met and there was a visible effort made to include me in the work environment.
What I wish was different
The training I received the first day, which was mandatory for all UAB workers, was not related to what I would be working with.
Advice
Make sure to be "on" even though there may not seem to be any work that needs to be done. During my first week my supervisor was out of town for a conference, and strictly speaking, I had "nothing" to work on. But during that week I spent my work hours exploring and making designs our department could potentially use. I ended up creating a mark for the department's motto, which we ended up using on a lot of our visual items. So if there is ever a quiet period at work, know that you can use this time to make the upcoming busy times easier.
