U.S. Department of Transportation

Intern

May - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I got to meet accomplished people high up in the organization.

What I wish was different

I wish I was given more work to do. I spent very little time actually working and wasn't able to accomplish much.

Advice

Don't take this position unless you have other work to do during 9-6 PM or if you are incredibly interested in transportation. Make sure you speak to your supervisor, not just HR, before accepting.

Intern in the Office of the Senior Procurement Executive

June - July 2017 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I felt that my supervisors were extremely helpful and supportive throughout my tenure. They always tried to reach out to their contacts in Washington who were involved in the issues I was interested in which was incredibly thoughtful and kind. I felt that I learned how to operate in an office setting and that I was exposed to the real, daily life of a federal employee. I absolutely loved living in DC; a run around the monuments, amazing restaurants, and so much more.

What I wish was different

I wish that my supervisors had been better prepared for my arrival. While it was a bit of short notice, there were times when I was not doing much work, but when I was given a project, the work was not a waste of time.

Advice

I would say that you just be as helpful as possible, and ask questions even if they might sound simple. Your supervisors and coworkers have contacts and they want to help you in any way possible, so reach out and ask for help if you need it.

Intern

May - August 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I liked learning about a new field and having the chance to write a white paper on autonomous vehicles.

What I wish was different

I wish I'd had more opportunities to work closely with my supervisor.

Advice

It's important to reach out to as many people as you can at work, because it's easy for people to overlook the interns.
