I wish the location was closer to the northern Va area because the commute was very long.

Definitely do an internship before you graduate, its a good experience to see what your future will look like.

I was able to receive on the job training in a couple different chemical plants.
My position can also transition into a full-time employment upon graduation from college.
What I wish was different
I was only there for seven weeks this summer so they did not have me work specifically on any project. I would have liked to see an actual result from my time there this summer instead of just experience.

Learn everything you can. Learn everyone's job and try to help where ever you can.

My advice would be to understand that the public sector operates differently than the private sector. Many of the people you work with are current or former military personnel.

What I liked
Understanding cybersecurity requirements for DoD equipment and applications. I have had the opportunity to gain my CompTIA Security+ certification as well as take a SANS training course paid by the Army.
What I wish was different
I wish there were more opportunities for hands-on IT experience.
Advice
Be straight forward with your future employer about your goals. For example, if you want a job that is very hands-on, make sure they can offer that experience for you. This is your time to learn real world experience and you want to take full advantage of that.

Being paid to learn a particular skill that had relevance not only in a military setting, but in the civilian world as well. As well, meals were provided for those in training and for the most part it was pretty good.

I loved everything about my experience at the Department of Defense. I was based on Fort McNair, but the professor I worked for was asked to be a member of the National Security Council so I had to opportunity to tag along on all of his adventures in the White House and the Pentagon.
What I wish was different
I wish it was longer.
Advice
Don't count yourself out before you've even applied. Don't let being a woman intimidate you from the defense sector. Keep practicing another language.

The ability to understand the processes of the US government and how inrticrately connected these processes worked together to run this country I got to connect with various people and got to learn what career track within the government would be the best for me. I felt like I was doing meaningful work here.

Never be afraid to speak to the military personnel; they're people too and are just as fun as you and me outside of the office.
