U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants

Reception and Placement Intern

June - August 2018 • Raleigh, NC

What I liked

At USCRI, I worked directly with refugees and asylum-seekers during their first ninety days in the United States. I liked that I was given the opportunity to be a part of the beginning of our clients' new lives in the United States. While it was sometimes difficult to communicate with clients who speak different languages, some of the most gratifying experiences I had at USCRI were when I could communicate with our clients through body language and facial expressions – we were building bridges. The internship was moving and heartbreaking, reinforcing my interest in defending human rights particularly for refugees and immigrants. I feel that I grew a lot from the experience, and I will carry the lessons I learned during the rest of my professional and personal lives.
