Construction Engineering Intern

September 2017 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I am extremely autonomous in this position. I have my set of tasks that need to be completed each day and I have the freedom to complete them on my own time during the day. I feel like a normal salaried employee for a hot second in this sense.

What I wish was different

I wish the company gave interns a little more respect. I have never felt more like an intern with any other company than this company. Not like they make me go get coffee for the office but when menial tasks come up like fixing the coffee machine I am always the first person they look to. This makes me feel a little underutilized.

Advice

Often I am tasked with problems and given barely any insight into how to solve them. Don't immediately ask a bunch of questions from the getgo. A few is fine, but they want you to learn via trial and error. Just do what you think is right, show them the results, and see what they say. Odds are they'll figuratively tear it to shreds with what needs to be fixed, but this is all apart of the learning process.
