The Toro Company

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2023 • Batesville, AR

What I liked

I liked the hands-on experience of working in the test lab with the Research and Development department.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have gotten lunch with my boss and coworkers a few more times to get to know them better.

Advice

This experience taught me that going into the engineering field isn't as intimidating as I thought.

Marketing Intern

May - August 2023 • Iron Mountain, MI

What I liked

I really loved working with the marketing team at BOSS Snowplow. I was able to gain valuable knowledge through an incredible work experience, all while being a part of an amazing group of people. I had a very hands-on experience and got to see my work firsthand on the company's social media and in various ways on campus.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to communicate and talk with marketing interns at the other Toro Divisions more. I would love to know what other people in my same role are up to and collaborate with them in some way.

Advice

Soak it all up. I was fortunate enough to be an intern at BOSS Snowplow for two years in a row, and I wouldn't trade my experience for anything. One of the best things you can do while being an intern is say "yes". Say yes to a project that might push you out of your comfort zone a bit, say yes to joining a committee or volunteering for an event. Soak up every ounce of the experience that you can, even if it doesn't directly pertain to your internship position, it will be a learning opportunity and valuable experience in some way.

Computer Engineering Internship

May - August 2022 • Bloomington, MN

What I liked

They have a very well structured and established intern program. The other interns and myself had plenty to do as well as got to listen to many different people speak during our time. More personally, the team I worked with was very helpful. They gave me plenty to do and were always willing to listen to any questions I had.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have gotten to work on bigger projects more. I understand that allowing interns to mess with products that are going to be sent to production is risky, so I get why they did not let me. My projects were still nice, but most of them focused on internal tools and databases. Getting to work on more things further down the line would have been cool.

Advice

If you would like to get know what it is like to work at a large company, The Toro Company will give you that experience. It is much different than anything I had worked before, but I enjoyed getting the experience since it allowed me to see a very different working environment. Another piece of advice would be, be ready to come up with ideas. The main project I worked on was of my own design, and they greatly encouraged that.
