StartFast Ventures

Marketing Intern

May - August 2019 • Syracuse, NY

What I liked

I liked that they didn't hold our hands through the process. They gave us things to do but we had to figure it out as we went along. I also was able to meet a lot of successful people and was able to grow my network.

What I wish was different

I wish I got paid! I wish my degree program was used more specifically in the process. Not a lot of what I did was directly related to my degree in Marketing.

Advice

Find ways to be motivated for yourself, especially in an unpaid internship. This is important because it is so easy to lose motivation when you're not getting paid and there is a lull in the work load. If your bosses see you slacking even once it leaves an impression on them. Be on top of your game 100% of the time when you are working.

Marketing Associate

September 2018 • Syracuse, NY

What I liked

I originally saw this position from a Career Services email in August before I got back to school. I was entering my senior year and knew I needed to be working throughout the year to gain experience for when I graduate. I applied to the position and interviewed with the Program Director, James Shomar on campus. After receiving the offer, James took a generous amount of time out of his schedule to explain everything about StartFast and the type of work that I would be doing. This was so helpful and was a great transition into a field like venture capital that I had no previous experience in. Over the course of the year I have enjoyed everything that I have been doing for StartFast. I was able to do such a variety of different tasks that it is so challenging for me to constrict it to only a few bullets on my resume. I can talk endlessly about how insightful it has been working with James and how much I have learned. He always made sure that I was gaining experiential learning while being productive in the work that had to be done. I had freedom of testing different strategies and always received great feedback about what was working the best to prioritize time into.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have had the opportunity to start with StartFast over the past summer (2018) since I would have been able to work with the companies in the cohort. I didn't get a chance to see the program in progress, but I still got to network with co-founders from the cohort through zoom calls which I am very grateful for. If you have the chance to be in Syracuse over the summer and see the cohort, I highly recommend!

Advice

Do not get nervous about feeling uneducated about what StartFast does. It is easy to learn if you apply yourself and it is experience that is standing out on my resume!
