What I liked

My experience at Siemens Energy has been nothing but great. My managers are very flexible, patient, and willing to teach me anything I don’t know. They always make sure to let us know when we were doing a good job, and they don’t have unrealistic expectations of what kinds of task I can accomplish. Overall, great job, great pay, and great people!

What I wish was different

I wish there were more video trainings during the onboarding process instead of just PowerPoint slides.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask questions, good managers will love to see your interest in the company and on the job. They are looking for reliable, hard working and easy going employees. If you show you care and you’re trying your best, they will certainly notice your effort and you will most likely get a return offer.

What I liked

I liked the flexibility that my internship mentor gave me to use my skills to develop my own summer experience. I learned so much about the functioning of the gas turbine industry, and I learned how to work with a team to develop a product of my own.

What I wish was different

As with any large company, my progress was slowed by a lot of the existing bureaucracy. It took some time to get access to a laptop and the floor that I would work on. Also, as an intern, I ran into many IT issues with getting access to software licenses and getting into the system. If these obstacles did not exist, I would have been able to be more productive.

Advice

Get to know your fellow interns and find time in your life to hang out with them outside of work.

Industrial Engineering Co-op

What I liked

It was a really great experience getting to learn about the inner workings of such a big company

What I wish was different

I was one of the first IE co-ops, so I was a bit of a guinea pig with the concept.

Advice

Even if an internship isn’t necessarily what you want to do for your career, it’s still valuable because you learn what you like and what you don’t like. You also get experience working in an office and/or shop with many different types of people.

I drove to work and it was a little over an hour to get to work

What I liked

The work was very interesting, and I learned a lot of technical laboratory skills. I also learned a lot about work culture in Germany.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was more involvement with other interns in the company.

Advice

Try to learn as much as you can about as many things as possible. General knowledge can be invaluable in solving new problems.

What I liked

Siemens Energy was well organized during the Covid-19 pandemic. Working from home was efficient

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had more of a typical office experience but working from home was a new skill to have.

Be proactive and make sure to take advantage of the resources to get the most out of your experience!

Digital Forensics Intern

What I liked

- The learning process, getting accustomed to new software, programs, scripting languages, or tools, and knowledge that I would have completely missed on. - The team I worked for/with. The feeling of solidarity and the general working environment was relaxed, welcoming, and engaging. - The location, huge company with growth opportunities, and networking opportunities at every door and cubicle.

What I wish was different

- From my end, I wish I would have engaged more with different departments, in general, going in, but the pandemic cut things short. I still managed to make the best of it, and it remains a huge asset in my resume going forward.

Advice

- Network, talk to people, offer to help anyone who needs it, take up new tasks while keeping up with the ones already in progress (time management is key), communicate with your supervisors or managers personally too (a long-term mentor is better than a short-term employer), but most importantly, take time to breathe once in a while.
