What I wish was different

With more time, I wish I could have performed more of the cellular work rather than the preliminary steps of molecular work.

Work closely with the professor and peers. Ask as many questions as possible.

What I liked

I liked the flexibility of being able to work from my own home. It allowed me the flexibility to delve into the nuisances of the research. I felt as if I was an equal working partner on this research investigation. I learned new research methodologies and how to utilize different technologies (R, Stata, ATLAS.ti) to analyze data. I was able to meet and network with many people from a variety of homeless shelters/services.

The environment was great, all of the pro staff were friendly and helpful. They were very flexible with scheduling as well

What I wish was different

More consistent hours over the summer would be nice, but the fact the schedule was put out weeks in advance made up for that.

Be prepared to deal with different/difficult personalities when dealing with students and parents and don’t let it affect you!

What I liked

I absolutely love this job! Being an orientation leader was an unforgettable and wonderful experience that I would 110% do again! I loved meeting new students and their families and sharing my SCU experience with them! I loved representing Santa Clara University in which I actively promoted and supported the school's mission and values. I loved being a guide, mentor, and role model for new students! What I love most about this job is that it never ends (figuratively). Even after the orientation is over, I still talk to students and help them in any way I can, whether that's by offering advice or simply listening about their quarter so far.

What I wish was different

There are some small changes I would have liked to see in relation to organization and efficiency.

What I liked

I liked how easy it was to find lab experience on campus and the amount of diverse opportunities available made it easy to find my fit. I enjoyed my summer at Santa Clara in the Chemistry Department and Maker Lab. I would recommend undergraduate research to anyone interested in pursuing further education in any field.
