What I liked

The work culture and potential for growth at Salem Five are both excellent. I've worked here two summers in a row, and now have been brought on as part-time through the semester. I've worked in all kinds of environments from co-ops at big firms in Boston to family-run small businesses and blue-collar work. I can say without hesitation that Salem Five has been my favorite work experience thus far. My managers are incredible. They hold me accountable, but also are always ready to praise good work. They also are constantly looking for ways to challenge me and/or help me to grow, but fully understand the value of having a work-life balance. My coworkers are very warm and engaging as well, and it has been easy to make friends. I would strongly recommend the company to anyone who values hard work and growth.

What I wish was different

Before the pandemic, the dress code. That's very much a knit-pick though because the dress code is simply dress pants and a tucked-in button-down for men.

Advice

Salem Five's CEO started out with the company as an underwriter. Underwriters don't usually become the CEO of their company. At Salem Five, though, you will be invested in, and there's so much opportunity to gain responsibility and learn about different business operations. If you're not willing to think critically or build connections within the company, though, that won't happen. Perhaps this is universal advice, but I think it holds especially true here. Be curious; be engaging. Don't underestimate yourself, and ask questions. The banking and insurance industries have great need for young people, and you can secure a very successful and stable future for yourself by choosing to help drive this change at Salem Five. P.S. Make friends in other departments! There's so much going on between banking and commercial loaning and mortgaging and insurance writing and investmenting.
