Working to rather literally learn and share the found knowledge was a wonderful and uplifting experience from which I learned a great deal about my research subject and possibly my future career.

Firefighter

January 2019 • Colchester, VT

What I liked

I liked that I could be part of such a rare experience. There are not many colleges with this opportunity. The cost of my meal plan and living plan were covered by the department which meant I could focus on the department instead of a paying job.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to find a paying job in the daytime. I also wished that with my spare time I could have trained to drive the engines.

Advice

If a person has the time, they should train for the fire department nonstop.

Conducting a self designed independent research project (with the help from my advisor) on a topic of my interest

What I wish was different

Nothing! It was wonderful and I got all the support I needed

Advice

Adventure Sports Center Instructor/Employee

May - August 2018 • Colchester, VT

What I liked

I found myself outside just about every day whether it was mountain biking or rock climbing and it was always a ton of fun.

What I wish was different

The only thing I’d change is the weather. It’s rained a couple days and we had to stay inside. Other than that, no complaints or changes.

Advice

Find a job that’s fun. It makes it so much easier to wake up and roll into work when you enjoy what you’re doing.

Academic Communications Intern

June 2018 • Colchester, VT

What I liked

The internship allowed me to cultivate my skills in some computer systems wish it was a very new experience for me. Additionally I got to engage with potential students, future students, and their families in a professional way which I value as a skill moving forward. My coworkers were also incredible to work with!

What I wish was different

While the schedule of a 8:00am to 4:00pm job was nice, I struggled sitting at a desk for long hours. Sometimes the work was a little bit dry as well.

Advice

Be open to learning new skills, especially in areas that you wouldn’t expect to enjoy! I now have some experience with HTML coding which I never thought I would have. And, be confident in your abilities to do good work!
