When Rick and Kay Warren first arrived in the Saddleback Valley in December of 1979, they dreamed of planting a church that would be “a place where the hurting, the depressed, the confused can find love, acceptance, help, hope, forgiveness, and encouragement.” They knew that a great commitment to the Great Commandment and the Great Commission would grow a great church! On Easter of 1980, Saddleback Church held its first public service and 205 people, most of who had never been to church, showed up. That began one of the most exciting journeys of growth that any church has experienced in American history. Since then, God has continued to expand the church’s influence both nationally and internationally. Currently, Saddleback has over 500 ministries and 400 staff at our 19 campuses, including four international campuses in Berlin, Buenos Aires, South Manila, and Hong Kong. The principles that led to the church’s success come from the five biblical purposes of the church—worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and evangelism. Pastor Rick’s book, The Purpose Driven Life, focuses on the truth that life is “not about you,” and shows how God can enable each of us to live for His purposes. Saddleback is a teaching and training church and takes seriously the responsibility of equipping the next generation of leaders. We are better together!
