What I liked

I enjoyed being a part of a student's academic journey. Pathlight does not only encourage students to approach their academics with curiosity but also to understand that their academic performance is a way to glorify God. I have been so blessed to work with other who have one goal in mind. We reach these students not because we will get something in return, but because they are the next generation of leaders in this world.

What I wish was different

One thing I wish was different was the method of tutoring. Due to the pandemic, we can only tutor these students online. Besides the fact that it is difficult to teach online, there is the point that not all of these students have good internet access. There have been times where the weather has caused internet problems for our students. Since most of these kids come from low-income homes, they are victims of the internet not working effectively. In-person teaching allows these students to come to sessions without the concern of having terrible internet access.

Advice

One piece of advice that I would offer to anyone who would want to participate in a program like this would be to be patient. I have met quite a few students who do not get much support from professors or family. One student, in particular, would not speak and if he did it would be in phrases. After a few weeks of focusing on his struggles academically and being patient with him as he processed math problems, he started to open up and ask more questions. Now, whenever he joins a session he always has something to say. Of course, he is still coming out of his shell, but the patience I used definitely helped him to realize that I am here to help him because I care. Patience with students is the key. Sometimes students just need to know that you are there to support them and not criticize them.
