Engineerin Design Intern

May - December 2021 • Clear Lake, WI

What I liked

Right away, I was included in the design of real projects for Oxbo. I was an important member of the team from the beginning. One other thing I liked was the hands-on aspect of the job. I spent several weeks out in the field testing equipment I had helped to design and manufacture.

What I wish was different

A little more training on Oxbo-specific software right away would have been good, but other than that Oxbo has the co-op process pretty well figured out.

Advice

Make check off lists for tasks that you are going to have to do again. This ensures that you complete tasks with ever increasing accuracy and consistency (as you add more detail to the check list).

Mechanical Engineer Intern

January - August 2018 • Clear Lake, WI

What I liked

I really liked the freedom that I had with problem solving, coming up with solutions and being able to prioritize my own work. Being presented with several projects and tasks that all need to get done by certain deadlines made the job feel very realistic. The deadlines were not to difficult and I didn’t feel too stressed. I felt in the beginning of the Co-op the due dates were very relaxed. Gradually, the importance of my projects increased which helped to stay focused and motive me to get things done in a more timely manner. The people I worked with really made the job environment enjoyable and comfortable. It was easy to ask anyone questions or for help. My coworkers treated me just like a full-time engineer and they valued my thoughts and ideas.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to have more opportunities to work in teams when problem solving. I understand the lack of resources makes this difficult, but it would have been beneficial. As an alternative, working with another intern on the same project together would have been great.

Advice

The job was fast paced and never boring. There was always something new and different to work on. I got to work on all different areas of the machines throughout the co-op and wasn’t focused on one area or the same machine for a long time.
