What I liked

The leadership was great, and the work environment was awesome. I felt like I was working with my friends all the time!

What I wish was different

The leadership was great but sometimes a bit disorganized. For example, different managers had different protocols for the same thing, like checkout.

Advice

It will be hard, like sometimes the kids are rude, but it's good, honest work.

KidsTown Programs Intern

May - August 2019 • Orlando, FL

What I liked

The OSC has a unique work environment where you can learn a lot. KidsTown was great for learning how to work with younger kids and their families to engage in S.T.E.A.M. learning. The staff were very welcoming and encouraging during my internship. I was able to learn more about working in early childhood informal education while applying my own interests in science and outreach. The program was really flexible and allowed me to use my own interests and experiences to support the science center's mission. I was able to improve upon important transferrable skills like public speaking, time management, and program development. I had an amazing experience and I would highly recommend doing an internship at the Orlando Science Center.

KidsTown Intern

May - August 2018 • Orlando, FL

What I liked

I loved how much interaction had with variety of guest ranging from different age group to different cultures. As an intern you are given the opportunity to meet a mass of amazing people and help make their day more memorable and educational. Seeing the look on a families face when they are blown away by science, is one of the most incredible feelings in the world.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time at the science center to better develop projects I was already working on. It would also allow me to pursue some other fun ideas I had while interacting with intuitive guest. More time= More cool science stuff.

Advice

Make sure you are prepared to be the fun scientist that will change the day (and possibly life) of the young guest that visit OSC. Many of the young learners may be overwhelmed by the fast moving environment or feel embarrassed to engage with the material. It is your job to be the lighthearted source of fun and discovery that guides them towards excitement and engagement. Be fun, have fun, and impact the next generation through smiles and science!
